Since 1960, the annual Bainbridge Island Rotary Auction & Rummage Sale has raised almost $6 million for service projects. It’s a unique and revered community event that involves the generosity of over 4,000 donors, the tireless efforts of over 100 Rotarians and more than 1,100 Volunteers, and over 5,000 satisfied customers. One hundred percent of the money raised is reinvested by the Rotary Club of Bainbridge Island in our community and beyond.
Residents don’t have to look far to see those funds at work.
One-third of the proceeds are allocated to the club’s Large Projects Fund, where funds may accumulate from year to year. Over the years, that fund has helped build and expand the Library, the Bainbridge Commons, the Boys & Girls Club, the Don Nakata Pool, the storage barn at Helpline House and Rotary Centennial Park, Waypoint and Rotary Field Park.
The other two-thirds of funds raised are spent each year for on community programs, scholarships, international humanitarian projects and other worthy causes. Rotary invites funding requests from schools and non-profit groups, evaluates the requests, and makes allocations as funds permit. Thanks to in-kind donations by local businesses and volunteers, Auction & Rummage Sale expenses are kept remarkably low, so the vast majority of money raised can go to service projects and programs.
This diagram shows how the Auction & Rummage Sale proceeds were invested in 2010 thru 2013. It represents how the Rotary Club of Bainbridge Island serves our local and international communities.
None of the revenues of an Auction & Rummage Sale are used to fund the operating costs of the Bainbridge Island Rotary Club. The Club’s operating costs are funded through membership dues, and are maintained in a separate account.
